Agriculture In Grasslands
Grasslands were, before extensive farming and agriculture, the largest biome type in the world. The environment are to dry to allow the growth of forest, however not to arid enough to prevent the growth of non-woody, longed-lived plant species such as grasses, sedges, herbs and small shrubs. It was that kind of environment that once dominated nearly half of the Earth's surface.
It might be surprising to you and the whole world that everyone eats grass. It is estimated that 50,000 of the world's plants are edible, but we humans, use only 15 of those plants. Those 15 plants cover around 90% of the world's food resources. Three types of plants are used everyday in every country, and they are: wheat, rice and corn.
The length of the growing season in grasslands is determined by both precipitation and temperature variation. Growing seasons in hot climates vary between 120 and 190 days each year. In more temperate climates, the growing season starts when the average temperature reaches about 5 to 10 degrees C (40 to 50 degrees F) and can last from 100 to more than 165 days.
Food production changed grassland drastically because most of the lands of grassland biomes became farms or properties used for grazing. The weather in grasslands make it suitable for farming and grazing due to the rich soil and proper climate that enhances the growing of the crops.
